Abdullah Tarmugi

Independent Director

Abdullah Bin Tarmugi was appointed as our Independent Director on 1 November 2017. Mr Tarmugi was a former Cabinet Minister and Speaker of Parliament of Singapore ("Parliament"). He entered politics as a Member of Parliament (Peoples' Action Party) in 1984 and retired in 2011. During his time in Parliament, he held various political offices beginning as a Deputy Speaker, before moving on to holding ministerial positions in the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Community and Development and Sports. He was also the Speaker of Parliament from 2002 to 2011.
Prior to his political career, Mr Tarmugi worked as an urban sociologist and a senior statistician / planning analyst in the Civil Service from 1970 to 1980. He then joined Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. from 1980 to 1993 where he was a journalist and a market research practitioner.
Mr Tarmugi is currently retired but sits on various boards as an Independent Director. He also sits on the Presidential Council for Minority Rights and serves as a member of the National University of Singapore Board of Trustees, the board of the Tsao Foundation, and the board of The Courage Fund Limited and the board of the SR Nathan Education Upliftment Fund. Additionally, he is advisor to Mercy Relief, a local NGO involved in disaster relief work outside Singapore.
Mr Tarmugi graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) (Sociology) degree from the University of Singapore in 1969. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Urban Studies conferred by the University College, University of London under the Commonwealth Scholarship in 1972.
