18 pottery artisans honoured in Barishal
The 17th Potters’ Conference and Award Ceremony-2026 was held in Barishal today to preserve and promote Bangladesh’s traditional pottery and recognise the contributions of artisans engaged in the craft.
A total of 18 potters from different parts of the country received awards in various categories at the event, organised by the Potters’ Conference and Award Ceremony Barishal at a community centre in the city this noon.
Veteran potter Niranjan Pal of Monsurabad union under Bhanga upazila of Faridpur received the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to traditional pottery.
The programme began with a children’s drawing competition, followed by the main conference. Engineer Moynul Abedin, youngest son of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin and a patron of the arts, inaugurated the event.
Barishal City Corporation Administrator Advocate Bilkis Akhtar Jahan Shirin attended the programme as the chief guest.
The conference showcased the rich heritage, diversity and craftsmanship of pottery from different parts of the country. Various traditional clay products, including earthen pots, Manasa ritual pots, dolls, decorative clay jars, clay toys and other handicrafts, were displayed at the event.
Researchers, artists, cultural activists, academics and distinguished people from different professions also attended the programme.
The participating potters expressed their happiness at receiving recognition but urged the government to take effective measures to preserve the traditional craft.
Visitors said the event, organised for the 17th time, was helping introduce the younger generation to clay craftsmanship and a fading cultural heritage. Many brought children to the conference to familiarise them with the country's traditional pottery.
